Before summer, ‘at most’ allows for an earlier school finish. Individual school closures may differ.

Anniversary days by region

Choose your region to find its anniversary public holiday, the observed dates and whether it makes a long weekend. Some regions share an anniversary day.

Follow the school year around: 2026

Begin with January at the top and read clockwise. Blue arcs show terms, yellow arcs show holidays, and a dashed arc marks the Term 1 start window. The pale summer arc allows for different school closing and opening dates. Small marks pick out public holidays. The term table beside the wheel gives the term and holiday dates in text. Each school-year page also has a public holidays table, so colour is not needed to read the calendar.

The 2026 school year as a ring: 4 terms, 3 holiday periods between them and the summer holidays, with 11 public holidays marked (Mondayised days marked too). School holidays 2026 in full: half days, first days back, public holidays in the school year

Find your school year

Start with the year you need, whether you are organising childcare, planning leave or checking when school goes back. The Ministry of Education publishes one national calendar for state and state-integrated schools, with room for individual schools to choose some dates. Each year has its own page bringing together term dates, school holidays and the public holidays within that year. It also shows the first day back after each holiday period, or the opening window where schools choose their own day. Every date comes from an official page or from the legislation and is checked twice. For arrangements specific to your school or kura, confirm its calendar before making plans.

Public holidays and the rules behind them

Find the longer breaks

The long weekend pages show breaks of at least three days formed by public holidays and weekends, assuming you have Saturdays and Sundays off. Check the national dates and your region's anniversary day when planning leave.

Next long weekend: Friday 25 December to Monday 28 December 2026, 4 days off with Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

From the source to the calendar

Dates are taken from the official pages, or worked out from the Act where no table has been published yet, then compared with those sources again through a separate check. Weekdays are worked out from the dates rather than copied alongside them, giving the calendar another point of comparison. Nothing is estimated to fill a gap. Where a year or regional date has not been published, the entry says ‘not yet published’ instead of suggesting a likely answer. Source links let you read the original wording and see where each entry came from. If this calendar and an official page differ, the official page prevails. Term Dates NZ is independent and is not a government service.

Common questions

When are the next school holidays?
The next school holidays are the summer holidays, which start no later than Saturday 19 December 2026. The panel at the top of this page counts down from today. Near the end of Term 4, it says “at most” because your school may finish earlier.
Do all schools have the same holidays?
State and state-integrated schools follow the national calendar, but choose their opening day within the Term 1 window and may finish Term 4 early once their requirements are met. Private schools can set their own terms.
Where do the dates come from?
School dates come from the Ministry of Education. Public holidays and regional anniversary dates come from official government sources, with source links provided so you can check the original information.
