Accessibility
Term Dates NZ is designed to make calendar information usable through text, tables and visual summaries. The aim is to support people using keyboards, screen readers, magnification and different screen sizes. If something prevents you from finding or understanding a date, please report it through the contact page.
Access built into the pages
Pages use headings, landmarks and a skip link. Tables have captions and headers, and their scrollable regions can be reached with a keyboard.
The year wheel has a summary for screen readers, with the same dates available in a table. The current-status panel announces its content after loading without interrupting the screen reader.
Pages are built to WCAG level AA, with colour contrast checked in both the light and the dark colour scheme. The details shown when hovering over the year wheel are also given in the tables. Layouts support high zoom and narrow screens.
Checks before publication
Automated accessibility testing is carried out in both colour schemes before publication. The markup is also reviewed by hand to check structure and meaning.
Calendar downloads and the contact form
Use ‘Add to your calendar (.ics)’ on school year, public holiday year, region, summer holiday, NCEA year and Matariki pages. The contact form opens your own mail program so you can review and send your message.
Reporting a barrier
Use the contact page to describe the barrier and the page where it occurred. Details of your browser or assistive technology can help identify the problem, if you are comfortable sharing them.
